Students at the University of Iceland can participate in an exchange programme at one of our partner universities worldwide. Going on exchange gives you a wider range of study opportunities, the chance to learn a new language, meet new people and get to know different cultures.
Exchange studies can be credited to the student's programme at the University of Iceland, so the exchange period does not have to affect the total length of studies. There are possibilities of travel and subsistence grants for students going on exchange.
Partner Universities
The University of Iceland collaborates with over four hundred universities on student exchanges around the world. In the database for student exchange partners, you can search according to several different criteria to assist you in finding available universities. You can sort by country, subject, level of study and more.
Requirements for exchange studies
Exchange studies are available to undergraduate and postgraduate students in most subjects. A good time to go on exchange varies between study programmes, so it is important to consult the person responsible for the programme or the faculty’s international coordinator.
More information on requirements for exchange studies can be found here.
The exchange process
You can read about the exchange process step-by-step here, from the start to the end of the exchange study period.
Grants and funding
During exchange studies, tuition fees at the host institution are waived, but students pay the annual registration fee at the University of Iceland. If applying for exchange studies through the Nordplus and Erasmus+ programs, students automatically apply for the respective programmes’ travel and subsistence grants. For exchange studies outside Europe, grants are available only in certain cases.
