If a student wishes to take a leave from their studies, they must obtain permission from their faculty before the start of the teaching period.
Leaves can last up to one year at a time and do not extend the maximum length of study, as specified in the faculty's regulations.
A student who is granted leave from their studies by their faculty for an academic year pays ISK 15,000 and retains access to the University of Iceland's systems.
You will lose your access to your UI username.
If studies are recommenced after an unregistered absence, it will be assessed whether previously completed courses can still count. This assessment will consider the length of the absence, the student's performance record and faculty regulations.
The faculty may grant permission to reopen a previously closed study record (see Withdrawal from studies at the bottom of the page).
A student must complete the annual registration in the spring at the end of their study leave.
If a student returns from leave between semesters during the academic year, they must pay a registration fee for returning to the University. See the tariff in the Course Catalogue.
A student who wishes to withdraw from their studies must send an email from their University email account to the Student Registration.
Before making such a decision, it is recommended to book an appointment with a student counsellor, review the situation, and go over the resources and support available to students, as well as student community projects.
When a student withdraws from their studies, their academic record is closed, along with their access to Ugla and their UI email account. However, this does not apply to students who have graduated. Should a student wish to return to studies after their record has been closed, reopening the record is subject to the faculty's approval. The length of absence from studies and the student's previous academic progress are taken into consideration when deciding whether to reopen the record or require the student to begin a new study record within the same programme.
