Students who are parents

Many university students are also parents and must therefore balance their studies with family life. This page provides practical information about rights related to parental leave, support from the Student Services (FS), the Icelandic Student Loan Fund, Student housing, childcare and other relevant issues for students with children.

Parental Grant

Students expecting a child are entitled to a parental grant from the Parental Leave Fund. The island.is website provides information about the grant as well as detailed rights for students who are also parents.

FS Preschools

The Student Services (FS) operates two preschools, both located in the student housing area on Eggertsgata. At least one parent/legal guardian must be studying at the University of Iceland. Rules regarding preschool admissions can be found on the FS website.
In certain municipalities, students may receive a reduction in preschool fees when confirmation of studies is provided. It is possible to get a confirmation of enrolment in Ugla under My Ugla → Confirmations and transcripts.

Student Housing

Students with children can apply for 2 to 4-room apartments. Families where both parents are enrolled at the University are given priority. More information is available in the Student Housing allocation rules (only in Icelandic).
All residents in Student Housing are eligible to apply for Housing benefits through the Housing and Construction Authority.
