Financial resources

There are several alternatives when it comes to the cost of living.

Student loan

During their studies, students can apply for a maintenance support loan from the Student Loan Fund. You can find information about the rights of nationals of the EEA and EFTA here, and the rights of other foreign nationals here.

A student may also be eligible for a maintenance grant to support children under 18. The conditions for loans and grants can be found in the Student Loan Fund regulations.

You can also contact a Student Council loan officer at lanasjodsshi@hi.is for assistance with student loans and interaction with the fund.

Maternity/paternity grant and childcare support

Students expecting a child are entitled to a maternity/paternity grant from the Maternity/Paternity Leave Fund. You can find detailed information on the rights of students with children on island.is.

Students with Disabilities and/or Specific Learning Difficulties

The National Union of Icelandic Students has a webpage for students with disabilities and/or specific learning difficulties but it's only in Icelandic. The section "Sjóðir og örorka" provides various information in Icelandic related to financial matters.

Unemployment benefit

Students not studying full-time can apply for unemployment benefits at the Directorate of Labor but with some limitations. Further details are available on the Directorate of Labour's website.

Housing benefit

If students meet certain conditions, they could qualify for housing benefit payments. You can check your entitlement to housing benefits using the housing benefit calculator at island.is.

Financial assistance

The City of Reykjavík provides financial assistance to individuals who are unable to support themselves and require help. Students living in other municipalities are encouraged to check whether similar financial assistance is available. Students facing serious financial difficulties can seek assistance from the Office of the Debtors' Ombudsman.

Tengslatorg (Careers Connection)

Students interested in part-time jobs, summer positions, or future employment can explore the opportunities available at the University of Iceland Careers Connection Tengslatorg.

Additionally, the portal advertises opportunities for internships within the university's departments.
