Setting up multi-factor authentication

Bellow you will find instructions on how to set up multi-factor authentication. You can add another authentication method later.

If you switch phones or phone numbers then you will need to move or reset the authentication before being able to set it up again.

Set up using an app
  1. Go to mfa.hi.is. NOTE that it is best to do this on a device other than the phone you are using for the two-factor authentication:MFA appið 1.png
  2. Type in your email address and click "Next":MFA app 2.png
  3. Type in your password and click "Sign in":MFA app 3.png
  4. If you are using your own device, it is a good idea to click "Yes" here. If, on the other hand, you are on a public computer, it is better to click "No" here:MFA app 4.png
  5. Here click "Next":MFA app 5.png
  6. When the image below appears on the screen, open your phone, download and install Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store (iPhone & iPad) or Google Play (Android). You can not use other authentication apps since Microsoft blocked it:MFA app 6.png
  7. Open Microsoft Authenticator on your phone:
  8. When you open Microsoft Authenticator on your phone for the first time, click "I agree". Allow notifications from the app if you are prompted:MFA appið 7.png
  9. Now click "Next":MFA app 8.png
  10. Click on "Next" again in the next window
  11. Now you will see a QR code. Now you open the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone:MFA app 10.png
  12. Select "Scan a QR code". Select "Work or school" if you are prompted to do so:MFA appið 10.png
  13. Your phone may now request access to the camera. Give permission and align the QR code in the middle of the screen to scan it. Then click "Next":
  14. On your phone you will see a window or a notification asking you to approve the sign-in. Enter the two digit number into the window and select "YES":MFA appið 11.png
  15. Notification approved. Click "Next":

Now everything should be ready for multi-factor authentication sign-in. You should not have to repeat the steps above until you get a new phone.

From now on every time you sign in to UI's pages or systems and are outside the UI network, you are asked to accept the login on the phone.

You can also confirm your sign in by selecting "Use a verification code" at sign in and use the code found in the Microsoft authenticator app by pressing on your account. If you have set up a default authentication method then you first need to click on "I can't use my [default method shows here] right now":MFA app 14.png
