Proof of graduation

Documentation needed to prove that you are a graduate of UI can vary. The recipient determines the required documents and their format, but most graduates need documentation for either an application for further studies or a job application.

Application for further studies

When applying for further studies, an electronically sealed transcript with graduation details will suffice in many cases. In others, you may need to submit a diploma. A certified copy of your diploma can be obtained at the Service desk at Háskólatorg, upon ID presentation.

  • Transcripts with graduation are available through self-service in My Ugla → Certificates and Transcripts and through self-service on My pages at island.is under the section Education (from the year 2015 onwards)
  • Confirmation of track status (available through self-service in My Ugla → Certificates and Transcripts)
  • Certified copies of diplomas are only issued on paper by the Service Desk, for a fee of 350 ISK per document. In some cases, graduates may need to bring their original diploma to obtain a certified copy. If the university has a copy on file, you only need to present an ID to purchase a certified copy. Certified hard copies can also be mailed to a legal residence, or you can email the Service Desk with the name and birth date (or kennitala) of a person you wish to receive your documents on your behalf.
  • A diploma supplement is rarely requested, but you can bring your originals to the Service Desk to get a certified copy on paper.
  • In the US and Canada, it is not uncommon for Universities to require applicants to have their documents evaluated by credential evaluation services, such as WES (World Education Services). If you need to submit documents through WES, you must first create an account with WES, where a reference number will be assigned. Once that is done, they can request that the Service Desk at the University Centre send the transcripts to WES using that number. Other schools might ask for some forms to be filled out alongside the transcripts, in which case you would also contact the Service Desk for assistance.
Job applications

When applying for a job, there are three different documents students can provide to prove that they have completed their studies (and you usually only need one of them).

  • The original diploma you receive at your graduation, which you can scan or photograph and attach to an electronic application. Once hired, you may need to present the original if requested by your employer.
  • Transcripts with graduation (available through self-service on My pages at island.is under the section Education)
  • Confirmation of track status (available through self-service in My Ugla → Certificates and Transcripts)

Electronic documents available through self-service

  • Transcripts with graduation are available on "My pages" at island.is under the section Education for all graduates of the University of Iceland from the year 2015 onwards, in both English and Icelandic. This transcript will show all finished courses and grades.
  • Confirmation of track status will state the number of credits a student has completed and is registered for. If you have graduated or are registered for graduation, this will also be stated. You can download the confirmation of the study track in your Ugla for free.
