Registering for Graduation
Students intending to graduate must register their intended graduation month before the estimated graduation date. This can be done in Ugla during the review of course registrations at the beginning of the autumn and spring semesters.
You need to familiarise yourself with the regulations from your department regarding the submission of your thesis or final project, and confirm your graduation plans.
If you are not registered for graduation and/or have not confirmed with your department by the end of the semester that you intend to graduate, it will be assumed that you do not intend to graduate.
Detailed information about graduation can be found in the Course Catalogue.
Ceremony
The University of Iceland graduates candidates three times a year: in February, June, and October. Specific dates are listed in the University of Iceland's Academic Calendar.
No formal graduation ceremony is scheduled in October, but candidates may collect their graduation certificates in the Ceremonial Hall (Hátíðasalur) of the University Main Building. The exact time will be announced in due course.
Certificate/Documents Provided Upon Graduation
When you graduate from the University of Iceland, you will receive:
- A graduation certificate along with an English translation.
- A transcript in Icelandic and English with details about your graduation. This includes a list of your courses, grades, and the dates you completed each course, as well as information about the degree title, graduation date, GPA, and total number of credits.
- A certificate supplement in Icelandic and English. This contains detailed information about the degree and the educational institution.
If a candidate is absent from the graduation ceremony, they can obtain their graduation documents at the Service Desk at the University Centre upon presentation of a valid ID. The certificates are kept at the Service Desk for three years and are then transferred to the University Archives.
Students who complete a Diploma programme can get their certificate at the Service Desk at the University Centre.
If students living outside the capital area are unable to attend the graduation ceremony or visit the Service Desk, they may request that their graduation certificate be sent by post at their own expense. The University of Iceland is not responsible for the graduation certificate once it has been handed over to the postal service.
Please note that graduation certificates and certificate supplements are never reissued, so keep your certificates safe!
Copies of certificates are only issued on paper after graduation. For more details, please see Confirmation of Graduation.
Micro-credential
Students who complete a micro-credential programme do not graduate. Instead, they receive a certificate and a micro-credential supplement, both available only on island.is.
