Student card

The student card is an ID card for university students, offering discounts at many businesses nationwide. Information about discounts can be found on the student council's website.

Application Process

You can apply for a student card once you have paid the registration fee and gained access to the Ugla intranet. Only one card is needed throughout your studies.

You apply for the card in Ugla (My Ugla - Student cards). You must decide whether you want the card to grant access to buildings outside regular hours. This cannot be changed later. A card without access is free, but a card with access costs 2.400 ISK, which is paid when the card is collected.

Student Card with Access

Many students prefer cards with access to facilities like computer labs and reading rooms outside normal hours.

  • Opening hours with an access card: 7:30 a.m. - 12 midnight daily.
  • Buildings: University Centre (Háskólatorg) and its connected buildings, with options of additional access to VR-II, Saga, Edda, Askja or Læknagarður. If students wish to access other buildings, they need to contact the relevant faculty.
  • Extended hours during exams: until 2 a.m.
  • Access cards also provide access to controlled parking areas near Askja.

Card renewal

The card's expiration date is indicated by a sticker on the back. Renew your card at the University Centre Service Desk free of charge. Students outside the greater capital area can request a new sticker by post to their legal residence.

Student Card FAQs

What if my photo was rejected?

The photo must be a clear portrait suitable for an ID. If your photo is rejected, reapply with a new one. The form allows you to crop the image to show only your face. Avoid objects like food, drinks, and logos. If technical issues arise (e.g., blank or sideways photo), a staff member will have to reject it so you can upload a new one.

There may be several reasons why a photo is rejected:

  • Dark or overexposed photos do not print well.
  • Photos taken on an iPhone sometimes fail to display or print poorly. In such cases, you need to apply for the card using another device.
  • A photo of a printed photo does not display well.
What if I haven't received my card?
Check your card application status in Ugla. If your photo is rejected, you will receive an automatic email. Once approved, you will get an email when the card is ready for pick-up at the University Centre Service Desk. You can also request a non-access card to be mailed to you by replying to the notification email.
What if my access card isn't working?
Let us know about the issue here and please provide details of the building and time when access failed.
What if I want to upgrade to an access card?
You can request your current card without access to be removed from the system, and once it has been removed, you can apply for a new one with access. Return the old card when picking up the new one.
What if I lost my student ID card?

You need to report the card as lost so it can be removed from the system, allowing you to apply for a new one. You can report a lost card here at the Help Centre, but you will need to sign in to do so.
