Open and closed Inspera exams, what's the difference?

Inspera is the University of Iceland's e-examination system. Using Inspera allows students to bring their own devices to the examination room and take exams on them.

Inspera exams are either "locked" or "open." The teacher decides which approach is most appropriate in accordance with the course assessment plan and learning outcomes.

When we refer to locked exams, it simply means that limited or no additional resources are permitted or will be available during the examination. Sometimes these kinds of exams are referred to as "Closed-book" exams as opposed to "open-book" exams, when all resources are allowed. Students must therefore rely entirely on their memory, knowledge, and understanding.

When deciding whether an exam should be open or locked, the decision essentially comes down to whether:
  1. All additional resource material will be permitted during the examination. - An open-book exam
  2. Only specific resource materials selected by the teacher (such as PDF documents, websites, or web domains) will be accessible. - A closed-book exam (with specific resource materials).
  3. No additional resource materials will be permitted - A closed-book exam.
When exams are open, all resource materials are permitted, and students may use their computers as they normally would throughout the examination. This means that students may access and use, for example:
  • Web-based and desktop applications,
  • Websites and online resources,
  • All kinds of documents stored locally on their computer, in cloud storage services, or on external devices.
Student Workflow for an Open-Book Exam (Open Inspera Exam)
  1. The student opens a web browser on their computer, navigates to https://hi.inspera.com and logs in.
  2. The student locates the correct exam in the exam list and clicks "Click here to get ready →"
    • In regular open-book Inspera exams, students do not need a password to access the exam.
      • An exception applies to on-campus open examinations, where so-called day passwords are typically used. These passwords are provided by invigilators/teachers once all students are ready to begin.
    • The student waits patiently for the exam to open. Before the opening time of the exam, the "Start test→" button remains greyed out (disabled).
  3. Once the exam's scheduled start time has been reached, the student clicks "Start test →"
  4. On the final page of the exam, marked with a , the student then clicks "Submit now" to hand in his exam submission.
Open-book Inspera exams can be taken on almost any internet-connected device, provided it runs one of the following operating systems: macOS, Windows, iOS, ChromeOS, or Linux (Ubuntu).

In closed-book Inspera exams, students bring their own device (computers) to the examination rooms. For closed-book exams, either Safe Exam Browser (SEB) or the Inspera Exam Portal is used to lock computers in examination mode, with the latter expected to become the sole solution over time.
Student Workflow for a Closed-Book Exam (Locked Inspera Exam)
  1. The student opens a web browser on their computer, navigates to https://hi.inspera.com and logs in.
    • The exam should be visible on the Inspera Dashboard under the “Upcoming tests” tab.
  2. The student locates the correct exam in the exam list and clicks Click here to get ready →”.
    • This action launches Safe Exam Browser (SEB), a secure examination browser that restricts access to:
      • Websites and online resources;
      • Any applications, whether web-based or installed on the computer;
      • Files stored on the computer.
      • At this point, the student cannot proceed any further and must wait until the exam opens and everything is ready in the examination room.
  3. The invigilator/teacher provides the student with a password (the SEB password) required to access the exam.
  4. Once the exam's scheduled start time has been reached, the student clicks "Start test →"
  5. When the student has completed their work, they must call an invigilator/teacher and do the following in their presence:
    • On the final page of the exam, marked with a , the student then clicks "Submit now"
    • The student must then close Safe Exam Browser in the presence of the invigilator or instructor. During this process, an exit password may be required, which will be provided by the invigilator/teacher.

While students are taking a closed-book exam, their computers are temporarily transformed into exam workstations, where only the examination itself and any resources specifically authorised by the teacher are accessible, whether digital or physical.

NOTE: Safe Exam Browser (SEB) must exclusively be installed through an Inspera Demo-Test!

It is extremely important that students open and navigate a closed-book Inspera Demo-Test. As part of this process, the student will install or update the correct version of Safe Exam Browser(SEB) on their computer. It is crucial that Safe Exam Browser be downloaded solely via an Inspera Demo-Test.
Although Safe Exam Browser can be downloaded from various websites, Inspera does not support all SEB versions, and this may even apply to the latest versions released by the SEB project..

We minimise the risk of technical issues during examinations by installing the SEB browser via the Inspera Demo-Test.

How do I install Safe Exam Browser (SEB)?

Please refer to the instructions in Ugla: UGLA - Download and install Safe Exam Browser

What should I do if my computer cannot run Safe Exam Browser?

Students registered for a locked Inspera exam can get a loaner computer from the Central Examination Office.

  • If the exam is administered by the Central Examinations Office (i.e., any exam listed on the official examination timetable), loaner computers are available in the examination room. The student simply needs to talk to an invigilator, who will provide a loaner computer.
  • If a teacher or department administers the exam, the student should inform the relevant teacher, who will make the necessary arrangements.
What are "additional resources" in exams?

Examples of resources that may be made available in locked Inspera exams include:

  • Websites and online resources that the teacher wants students to have access to during the exam, such as digital calculators, web-based translation tools, legal databases, etc.
  • PDF documents containing materials that may assist students in completing the exam, such as tables, formula sheets, reference materials, etc.
  • Software applications such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, R, SPSS, etc.
    • If access to any of these applications is required, the examination will usually be conducted in one of the University's computer labs.
