VPN connection

Staff of the University of Iceland that have a university computer can open the "Software Center" on their computer and install GlobalProtect from there and then follow the instructions from step 6.

1. Download "Windows 64 bit GlobalProtect agent" through vpn.hi.is. Sign in using your university email (username@hi.is) and password if prompted.
2. Open the file. It should be located in your downloads folder.
3. Click on "Next":
4. Click on "Next" again:
5. Finish the installation by pressing "Next":
6. Once the application has been installed it can be found in the bottom right corner. It might be hidden under the arrow.
   Click on the icon 🌍︎:
7. Select "Get Started":
8. Type vpn.hi.is under "Portal" and click on "Connect":
9. Now you only need to sign in to your university account to connect the VPN:

Please note that after you sign in for the first time the sign in method for the PC will change, to fix it you only need to click on "Sign in options".

The VPN is disconnected by clicking on the three lines ☰ and selecting "Disconnect":

Please note that the VPN application requires MacOS 11 or newer.

1. Download GlobalProtect for Mac through vpn.hi.is. Sign in using your university email (username@hi.is) and password if prompted.
2. Open the file. It should be located in your downloads folder.
3. Click on "Continue":
4. Click on continue again:
5. Now select "Install":
6. Enter the computer authentication:
   
7. Select "Move to Bin":
8. The GlobalProtect  🌍︎  app will now appear on the menu bar in the top right corner. Click on the icon and select "Get Started":
9. Type vpn.hi.is under "Portal":
   
10. Now you only need to sign in to your university account to connect to the VPN:

 

The VPN is disconnected by clicking "Disconnect":

1. Go to "Settings and Networks".
2. Click on "+" under VPN.
3. Name the VPN connection. Click on "VPN Protocol" and select "Palo Alto Networks GlobalProtect"
4. The gateway is vpn.hi.is
5. Click on "Connect".
6. A new window will open momentarily where you sign in with your university email and password.
7. Select "Yes".
8. Select "Connect" again and then "Login". You may need to click on it 1-3 times before the VPN connects.

If you are not using the most common versions of Linux will need to setup GlobalProtect-openconnect with GUI. The GUI version can't be used since the University doesn't have a licence for it, the app was chosen because it offers SAML authentication.

1. Download the application through Github. Select the correct Distro version.
2. To connect to the VPN you must enter sudo -E gpclient connect vpn.hi.is into the terminal.
   If a browser doesn't open then enter the command again.
3. Authenticate with your university email and password.
4. To disconnect use the terminate command CTRL-C. TO continue using the same shell by putting the executable in the background with CTRL-Z and bring it to the front with the command fg

1. Download GlobalProtect through the App Store and then open the app.
2. Here we recommend accepting status notifications for the VPN (for example if the VPN loses the connection):
3. Accept the terms of service.
4. Type vpn.hi.is under "Address":
5. Authorize GlobalProtect to create a VPN connection:
6. Enter the phone's authentication:
7. Sign in to your university account to connect to the VPN:
8. The device is now connected to the VPN.

1. Download "GlobalProtect" through the Play Store and then open it.
2. Accept the terms of service by pressing "OK":
3. Here we recommend accepting status notifications for the VPN (for example if the VPN loses the connection):
4. Type vpn.hi.is under "Address":
5. Sign in to your university account to connect to the VPN.
6. Authorize GlobalProtect to create a VPN connection:
7. The device is now connected to the VPN:

The VPN is disconnected by clicking on the center or by selecting the three lines ☰ and then selecting"Disconnect":

If the app is stuck on connecting then it has most likley not finished the sign in process

1. Click on the three lines and select "Cancel".
2. Close all web browsers (Edge/Chrome/Safari/Firefox...).
3. Try connecting again.

Please note that after you sign in for the first time the sign in method for the PC will change, to fix it you only need to click on "Sign in options".

Check if another VPN app is open, wether you have any custom DNS settings set up or if the Anti virus is blocking the connection. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the app again.
