Students living in Student Housing (Stúdentagarðar) have access to free Internet by cable. Students can register one device (router or computer) to the apartment.
Residents of Saga receive a router with the apartment that is ready to connect to the internet. Other residents will need to provide their own router and register it into Ugla.
When connecting through the Universities network you must follow the Acceptable Use Policy.
Where do I apply for internet at student housing?
- Contact Student Housing and give them your Kennitala and Ugla username to get internet in your apartment.
- It is worth noting that Icelandic Student Services sends information about new tenants after 1 pm and 6 pm every day and only then is it be possible to connect to the Internet.
How do I connect to the internet with a router?
To connect your router to the internet you must register the router's WAN MAC address into Ugla. Please note that the MAC address on the sticker is not necessarily the same as the WAN MAC address.
Residents at Saga can skip this step.
- Start by connecting your device to the router either with an ethernet cable or wirelessly.
- Wireless: Connect the ethernet cable to the WAN port on the router and connect the other end to the wall. Next connect to the routers Wi-Fi network. The name and password is usually written on the sticker underneath. It does not matter that there is no internet.
- Wired: Connect the ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports and the other end to your computer.
- Find the router’s IP number and insert it into a browser.
- Most often the IP number or website is written down on the sticker that is on the router. It can also be found in the instructions. The IP number or website will look like 192.168.1.1 or https://tplinkwifi.net/
- You can also open "Command Prompt" on Windows and write "ipconfig", The IP number will appear under "Default gateway if connected by wire.
- Log in with the username and password that is written on the router’s sticker or check the router's instructions. Usually it is admin and admin.
- The username is usually "admin"
- The password is usually "admin" or "1234"
- You can factory reset the router to activate the original password.
- Locate the WAN MAC address. Often it is under the “Internet” or “Status” tab. The address should be almost the same as the one on the router label except for the last 1-2 digits.
- Register the WAN MAC address in Ugla. You can find the application under Home > IT services > Applications > Internet access on campus.
- You need to wait for one hour before the MAC address is active in the system. After one hour the internet connection should be operational. If not, try restarting the router disconnecting it from power and then reconnecting it.
- If a message appears that says you're not registered in student housing then you need to contact Student Housing and ask for internet by giving them your Kennitala/username.
- If a message appears "MAC address appears to be wireless" then you need to check if the router is set to routing mode instead of bridge mode. You can also try factory resetting it and see if the WAN MAC address has changed in the settings.
Connecting the router to the internet:
- Connect the ethernet cable to the WAN port on the router and to the "Internet" port on the wall. If that port is not active then try another one. Contact Student Housing if the internet port is incorrectly labeled.
- Now you should be connected to the internet.
How do I connect to the internet without a router?
You can only connect one device to the internet at student housing so it is recommended to get a router as it can route several devices to the internet.
If you do not have a router then you can also set up a wired connection for one computer directly.
- Start by locating the MAC address of the computer.
- After finding the MAC Address you need to register it in Ugla. Go to
IT services → Applications → Internet access on campus. - Write in the MAC address and finish the application. If a message appears that says you are not registered in student housing then you need to contact Student Housing and ask for internet access by giving them your Kennitala and username.
It will take one hour for the computer to be registered in the system. Please note that only one ethernet port is active in the apartment.
Common issues
- User not registered to student housing: You must contact student housing and give them your Kennitala and username so that they can register you for internet access. The registration updates after 1 pm and 6 pm every day and only then is it be possible to connect to the Internet.
- [MAC] is already registered too...: If you bought the router from another tenant then it is likely that it is still registered to that tenant.
- [MAC] appears wireless: The router is likely not set to "Routing mode" (DHCP). Factory reset the router and then search for and register the WAN MAC address again.
- Have you registered the correct WAN MAC-address of the router through Ugla?
- Is the router connected to the active ethernet port on the wall? Only one port is active. Contact Student Housing if the internet port is incorrectly labeled.
- Is the ethernet cord connected to the WAN port on the router?
- Does the router have a combined WAN/LAN port? If so then you will need to change the settings on the router so that the port only works as a WAN port. This is common on Huawei routers.
- Try factory resetting the router.
- If you just moved between student housing apartments then make sure the internet has been moved to the new apartment.
- Try connecting to the internet with a different device, also check the Firewall settings, anti-virus software, Network card drivers and so on.
- Contact The Division of IT if nothing works.
- Try a different ethernet cord.
- Is the ethernet cord loose?
- Try factory resetting the router.
- The router is often the culprit so we recommend testing another router by registering it in Ugla. If you suspect that the ethernet port is to blame then send in a repair request through "My pages" on the student housing website.
- Check if you got a notification from Student Housing about an internet outage. A power outage can also cause the internet equipment to shut off.
- The traffic could also have been limited due to virus infection or too much out/in traffic, in this case you will receive an e-mail regarding the limitation from netmenn@hi.is.
