IREI (Icelandic Research e-Infrastructure) is a unit within IT Services at the University of Iceland (UTs) that operates a core electronic infrastructure for research in Iceland. The core rests on four pillars: expert consulting services, research data storage and management, data sharing, and computing power.
Two main IT services are currently offered:
- High-performance computing (HPC) clusters — computing power for demanding computational workloads (the Elja, Stefnir, and Mímir clusters).
- Nextcloud data cloud — secure data storage and sharing for research projects.
All IREI services run on UTs' own hardware, and data is stored in UTs data centers in Iceland — at Saga and at the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Data therefore never leaves the country.
Services under the IREI umbrella are available to Icelandic universities and government-run research institutions. Researchers at independent research institutions can be granted access if the research project is publicly funded.
