Social life and culture

UI staff have numerous opportunities for an active social life. Throughout the school year, various events occur, and many active staff associations are active within the University.

Gatherings

The Annual Festive Bal

Once a year, the Annual Festive Ball is held for all school staff and their partners. The event is specifically advertised on Uglas's event calendar, and additional announcements are sent via email and posted on Ugla.

Autumn and spring celebrations

Each autumn and spring the Office of the Rector invites all staff and their partners to a celebration with light refreshments and live music. The event lasts for approximately an hour and a half.

The Christmas Ball

The Christmas Ball for university staff, students, and their families is held between Christmas and New Year's. It is a cherished tradition enjoyed by both students and staff. The UI Division of Human Resources is responsible for the event, which takes place in the University Centre. Further information on the date and time can be found in Ugla under Events, in Ugla news, and via email.

Staff associations

There are several staff associations at the UI. Their purpose is to reinforce the social life and unity of the staff. Not all faculties or departments have a staff association.

Gleðibankinn (The Bank of Fun) - staff association for the School of Social Sciences

Gleðibankinn organizes five events over the academic year: a street barbecue in autumn, a School opening ceremony in the autumn semester, an aperitif before the UI Annual Festive Ball, a Christmas celebration, and a Spring Festival. Entrance to any event organized by Gleðibankinn is free for members and includes refreshments and entertainment. A small membership fee is subtracted from members’ wages every month.

MIST - staff association for staff in central administration

The social scene at MIST is vibrant, featuring monthly events such as a pub quiz, dart battle, bowling, author readings in December, beer tasting, Easter bingo and a Spring Trip. A schedule for what is to come is published at the beginning of the year. You don’t have to be a member of MIST to participate in events. A small membership fee is subtracted from members’ wages every month. You can email mist@hi.is for further information and they also have a Facebook page.

Music and Culture

University concerts

University concerts are held regularly throughout the academic year, featuring many of the foremost musicians in Iceland. Entrance is free. The programme for each semester is published on the University website as it is finalised.

The Women's Choir

The Women's Choir of the University of Iceland is open to all women who are interested and able to sing in a choir. They hold regular concerts that are open to everyone. More information can be found on the choir's Facebook page.

The University of Iceland Art Collection

The University of Iceland Art Collection shares exhibition space with students, teachers, and other university staff. This means that artworks owned by the museum are installed across various institutions and buildings within the university community. The UI Art Gallery has set up exhibitions in collaboration with other museums as well. You can follow the museum on Facebook.

Health

Sport facilities

Students and staff of the university can buy access to the Gym at the University Centre Service Desk for a modest fee. All open sessions in the hall are included as well as the fitness suite and sauna.

Health year

Creating a motivational, sustainable, and positive work environment that prioritizes staff health and well-being is essential. The University has an active health group that follows the Auðnast Health Year Circle, is divided into five two-month periods, each focusing on various health-related topics. For more information, please refer to Events in Ugla.

Sæmundur - The ocean-swimming group for UI staff

The group meets once or twice a week to swim in the sea together. It is usually around noon on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. You can apply to join the group on Teams.
