Workplace and Computer equipment

Work facilities, computer equipment, internet connection and a telephone number (if needed) should be available when people start their employement at the university, it is the responsibility of the the employer to ensure so. The work facility is often in an open workspace and most meeting rooms are bookable through Outlook. Near the open workspace there are often privacy spaces.

  • Calls are made through Teams. The employer makes sure you recieve a headset with a microphone.
  • The computer is a rental that is delivered with Windows set up and is renewed every 4 years.
  • With your username comes access to the Microsoft 365 (Office) suite that contains access to email through Outlook, data storage in OneDrive and sharepoint, Teams for chat and collaboration and the Microsoft 365 software package (previously called Office).
  • The setup of other IT equipment and apps is in the hands of the service representative of the IT department.

If you run into issues with your internet, phone or computer equipment then you can get help by sending in a ticket through the IT Service Portal. The Help desk also provides assistance from 8AM-4PM.

Frequently asked questions

First time you login to the computer it is important that you are on the UI network. 

The following you only need to do the first time you login while on the University network. 

  • Turn the computer on
  • Choose the “globe” in the bottom right corner 
  • Find “eduroam” on the list of wireless connections and choose "connect" 
  • Type your email (username with @hi.is) 
  • Type your Ugla password and click OK  
  • Choose “Other user” in the bottom left corner 
  • Type your username and password 

Now your computer is connected and ready for use. 

You don't need to be on the UI network for future logins. 

Division of IT has setup the computer for you ready to use.  It has the software most University staff need and software specifically asked for.  

Your employeer applies for a phone number through Ugla under Computing services → Applications → Telephone number

Your employer makes sure your workstation is ready for you. If its not connected to the internet then you can find instructions on how to connect to the internet here on the Service center either for a wired internet connection or a wireless internet connection.

In general the university does not pay for staff phones. If you think you need a phone because of the nature of your work then you will need to justify it to your employer. More information on purchase can be found through Ugla.

The computer is setup with UI systems in mind and division of IT owns it. Therefore members of staff do not have admin rights on the computer and can only setup software found in the Software Center wich is an app installed on the computer. If you need other software, please contact us through the service portal and we will help you set the software up or add it to the software center.

If your work requires you to have admin access to the computer you can apply for such an access by contacting us through the service portal . You will receive a form you need to fill out and return to us with the signature of your boss. After which your IT personnel will be in contact with your to setup the admin rights.

The heads of the division handle all of the purchase for their employees.
