SPSS on a virtual machine

SPSS

Academic divisions within UI have made a contract for virtual SPSS software licenses for staff and students.

Staff members should talk to the head of their department and students should contact their divisions main office for access to virtual SPSS.

Division of IT only gives or removes access to virtual SPSS at the request of the relevant division. 

SPSS in the computer labs is only available to users who have access to virtual SPSS.

All data must be stored in OneDrive otherwise it will be lost. When connecting to the virtual desktop users should start by signing in to OneDrive.

These instructions only work for those that have access to SPSS through Windows Virtual Desktop. 

The licenses on the server are limited so not everyone can use them at the same time, be respectful and logout of SPSS when it is not in use. 

  1. Start by getting Remote desktop from Microsoft and set it up
    Choose Windows 64-bit.

  2. Click on "Subscribe" and sign in with your University email address (same as Ugla). 
    If you have problems with Subscribe, use "Subscribe with URL," the URL is: https://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/api/arm/feeddiscovery

  3. Double click "Skjáborð fyrir SPSS."

  4. Click "More choices" and "Use different account" if you don't see your UI account. You have to login here with your UI email and password, check "Remember me" and then "OK."

  5. A desktop opens where you can access SPSS and OneDrive. To open your SPSS files they need to be on your UI OneDrive and the app must be running.

  1. Download and install Remote Desktop through the App Store:

  2. Sign in with Apple ID if asked:

  3. Click on "OK" and then again "OK," for each pop-up window:

  4. Navigate to "Connections" in the menu bar and click on "Add Workspace.":

  5. Copy and paste this URL: https://rdweb.wvd.microsoft.com/api/arm/feeddiscovery in the text field. Then click on "Add.":

  6. Input your University of Iceland email address and password:
  7. Click on "Skjáborð fyrir SPSS." Make sure you are in the "Workspaces" tab active:

  8. Input your University of Iceland email address and password. Then click "Continue."

  9. The Windows Virtual Desktop should now open. You can find SPSS on the desktop as well as OneDrive wich is required to save data on the virtual desktop so make sure its running:

  10. The next time you want to use SPSS, open Microsoft Remote Desktop and click on "Skjáborð fyrir SPSS."

You can have Remote Desktop on multiple screens, here we show you how to do that for the virtual SPSS:

  1. Open Remote Desktop, right click on "Skjáborð fyrir SPSS" and click "Settings"
  2. On the right you will see Settings. Put "Use default settings" on Off. In the "Display configuration" drop down menu choose "All displays" if you want Remote Desktop on all your screens. Choose "Select displays" if you want to choose the screens Remote Desktop will use.
  3. If you chose "Select displays" select the screens you want to use with Remote Desktop under "Select the displays to use for this session". The screens you want to use with Remote Desktop should be blue, others gray. Now you can double click "Skjáborð fyrir SPSS" to open Remote Desktop and begin using SPSS.

 

Common issues

If you see this message then you have not been given access to SPSS.
Your instructor or boss will need to ask the department for access to SPSS.

  • If you see this message it means that all of the virtual virtual machines are currently in use.
  • The licenses on the server are limited so not everyone can use them at the same time, be respectful and logout of SPSS when it is not in use.
  • If you can not access SPSS within 2 hours then contact the Division of IT through the Service Portal.

 

You have graduated and have lost access to IT services.
If you work for the school then let your boss know that you need a new staff username.

  • It is necessary to save all data through OneDrive otherwise the data will be lost, we recommend starting each session by turning on OneDrive through the start menu and logging in.
  • You should see a blue cloud icon in the bottom right indicating that OneDrive is turned on.
  • You can access your OneDrive folder in File explorer or by clicking on the Onedrive icon.

You can use SPSS up to one month after it expires (31st of July - 31st of August). The licence will then be renewed automatically, so no action is required on the users behalf.
