The green steps program

The University of Iceland is implementing what is known as "Green Steps" (Græn skref in Icelandic). The project aims to reduce the negative environmental impacts of operations and to enhance environmental awareness among the University's staff and students.

The Green steps consist of five steps, and within each, there are seven categories:

  • procurement
  • waste reduction and recycling
  • electricity and heating
  • transportation
  • kitchen and cafeterias
  • meetings and events
  • communication and management

The University of Iceland collaborates with staff and students to implement the Green Steps initiative across all faculties and departments.

According to the Icelandic Government's Climate Policy, all government institutions and offices are required to implement the Green Steps within their organisation.

Can I help implement the green steps?

The Division of Operations and Resources oversees the University's Green Steps project. Staff and students from all faculties and departments are encouraged to contribute to its implementation and act as "green ambassadors." Those interested can contact us at umhverfismal@hi.is.
