Transportation

The University of Iceland encourages its students and staff members to utilize sustainable transportation methods when travelling to and from the university campus, whether by bicycle, electric scooter, bus or walking.

Those who commute to the university campus by car are encouraged to carpool with friends and acquaintances if possible. Uglan offers further information on this option and a platform for forming carpooling groups.

In the next few months there will be an increase in parking fees on the UI campus, but to begin with, these new charges will not affect UI students and faculty.

    Designated disabled parking is available for all buildings.

    Parking fees apply to the parking spaces in Skeifan by the Main Building and in the area between Nýi Garður and Gimli.

    Vesturbær

    Hringbraut

    Parking fees apply to the parking spaces at Landspítalinn by Eirberg and Læknagarður, further information on parking fees can be found on Landspítali's website.

    Stakkahlíð - Skipholt

    Car parks can be found at Stakkahlíð, Háteigsvegur and Bólstaðarhlíð.

    Designated disabled parking is available.

    The staff of the University of Iceland can use electric vehicles and bicycles to carry out work-related errands in the capital area. The EV's are located at Aðalbygging, Tæknigarður, Askja, Læknagarður and Stakkahlíð. Bookings can be made through Ugla.

    Students at the University of Iceland are able to purchase Strætó bus fares with a student discount. Instructions for students can be found on Klappið's website, but bear in mind that before being able to purchase a card with a student discount you must first grant Strætó permission to access information from Ugla.

    Students in regional Iceland are advised to seek information on Strætó's website. 

    Bicycle racks can be found by all university buildings, and furthermore, bicycle shelters can be found by Lögberg and VR II. Bicycle repair stands can be found by the University Centre, VR II and in Stakkahlíð, should you need to repair minor damages on your bicycle.

     

    Walking and biking paths in the capital area

    Any staff member, with a 50% or higher job percentage can sign a transport agreement. The transport agreement implies a commitment to use environmentally friendly transport options when travelling to and from the University by taking the bus, cycling or walking at least three times a week. In exchange, staff members receive a twelve-month bus card or a free admission card to the University gym at Sæmundargata.

    The transport agreement can be finalized by sending an email to laun@hi.is. The mail must state that the application includes confirmation that the person commits to travel to and from school by bus, bike or on foot three times a week. Information regarding name, ID number and telephone number as well as specifying whether applying for a subsidy for a twelve-month bus card or a free admission card to the University gym at Sæmundargata must also be included in the email.

    Strætó's public buses stop by most UI buildings. At the University Centre's Service Desk, there is a screen which shows the real-time location of buses as well as the arrivals and departures at the University bus stops by Suðurgata and Hringbraut.

    Two types of bus cards, Klappkort and Klapp Ten, can be purchased at the University Centre's Service Desk. Klappkort is a refillable bus card and Klapp Ten are 10 one-fare bus cards.
