Frequently asked questions

Access to rooms is controlled with key cards which need to be picked up at the University Centre Service Desk during office hours before the rental period starts.

  • If guests are unable to collect the key card during office hours (Mon - Thu 8:30 - 4 pm and Fri 8:30-3 pm) it is their UI contact's responsibility to collect it and hand it over to the guests on arrival. In the lobby of Saga, there are several key boxes that contacts can use if guests arrive at an inconvenient time. Information about availability and the box numbers and codes can be obtained at the Service Desk when collecting the key cards or by emailing. gestaibudir@hi.is.
  • It's important to take the key card with you when leaving the room to avoid getting locked out
  • Guests are asked to leave their key cards in a return box on the 3rd floor.
  • If a guest has handed their key card over to their UI contact, we ask the contact to return it as soon as possible to the University Centre Service Desk.

You must use the north entrance (pictured below) facing the University Library.

Guests receive an access card to get from the lobby to the elevator area along with their room key card.

The rooms are located on the third floor (on the right when you exit the elevator)

Guests who are paying themselves will receive a payment link when they arrive, or they can pay at the University Centre Service Desk during their stay.

UI project numbers are charged once a month via accounting.

If an institute outside of the University would like to pay for the accommodation you can send information to gestaibudir@hi.is including the following:

  • full name of payer
  • Icelandic national ID number (kennitala) if applicable
  • mailing address
  • the email address the invoice should be sent to
  • other information you would like specified on the invoice

All the rooms are located on the 3rd floor of Saga's north wing.

All rooms can have a maximum of two guests and have a private bathroom and a small refrigerator. Six rooms have a kitchenette and a possibility of a connected room.

There is a shared kitchen on the floor as well as a laundry room. In the laundry, you have access to a washer, dryer, and an iron and ironing board among other useful things.

Free wi-fi is included but routers are still being set up in some rooms - but there is a router in the shared kitchen (room 351) that anyone can use.

The SSID and password is written on the router in your room.

If you can't connect to it and can't get a signal from the router in the shared kitchen either you can email gestaibudir@hi.is and request the SSID and password for the router located closest to your room.

Due to the building's history, most people familiar with it associate it with the hotel industry. We do try to offer many comforts for our guests, but the nature of the accommodation bears more resemblance to subletting a furnished apartment. Guests clean their rooms during their stay and have access to a kitchen and laundry for everyday needs.

If a guest is locked out they can contact the University Centre Service Desk at 525-4000 during office hours. On weekdays between 4 pm and 10 pm and Saturdays between 7:30 am and 5 pm, you can contact maintenance at 834-6512 and if applicable pay for emergency assistance (from Öryggismiðstöðin). Phone numbers and other necessary information are sent by email to guests/contacts before arrival.

All employees of the University of Iceland can book rooms at Saga but always need to specify a university email address ([at]hi.is) and a project number. Only UI employees can book a room.

The rooms are intended as accommodation for visiting scholars collaborating with the university locally for a short period.

The guest's connection to the University does not need to be explained upon booking. The person booking must state their university email address and the project number responsible for the guest's visit.

The contact person (the employee booking the room) needs to make sure the guest receives all necessary information as well as, in some cases, collecting keys and getting them to the guests on arrival. If a guest leaves without payment or cancels with less than 7 days notice the guest accommodation will contact the employee who booked the room.

Institutes outside the University that were allowed the use of our accommodation before moving to Saga maintain that right but are asked to specify a national ID number (kennitala) instead of a project number when booking.
